It is named after the small plastic card issued to users of the system. As specified by the ISO 7810 standard, most credit cards are the same shape and size making it easy for universal usage.

A credit card is different from a debit card in that a credit card does not remove money from the user's account after every transaction. The cost of the purchase is applied to a predetermined line of credit and the user is billed monthly, including interest.

It also differs from a charge card, although the term is sometimes used to describe credit cards. Charge cards require that the balance to be paid in full each month, while, as stated, credit cards allow the consumer to revolve their balance, with interest or usury being charged.

Ironically, while credit cards are often the cause of an undisciplined individual's dive into the world of bad credit, credit cards can also play a vital role in rebuilding one's credit as well. Although the author acknowledges that circumstances such as job loss, credit fraud, and identity theft can be the cause of a poor credit score, it is safe to assume that a large number of poor credit cases, worldwide, are the direct result of poor discipline in managing the credit granted to an individual.

Although the individual is ultimately responsible for the decisions they make, the credit card industry does play a role in consumers becoming buried in credit card debt. Anxious to sell their product, they flood a targeted market with pre-approved credit card plans. Enticed by the opportunity to have such funds available to them, many apply to and get the credit. Before they realize it, they find themselves charging one card to pay the other simply because they become over extended.

Those who desire to improve their credit score by making use of credit cards must first make a commitment to follow the basic steps in credit discipline mention in the article, "How To Rebuild Your Credit" which can be found on our site Rebuild-Credit.us. A link is provided in the author's bio.

There are four basic classifications of credit cards designed specifically for those with a poor credit history. They are as follows:

Secured Credit Cards

Secured credit cards are an option to allow a person with a poor credit history or no credit history to have a credit card which might not otherwise be made available to them. They are often offered as a means of rebuilding one's credit. Secured credit cards are available with both Visa® and MasterCard® logos on them.

Fees and service charges for secured credit cards often exceed those charged for ordinary non-secured credit cards. However, for individuals who have charged off on other credit cards or have a long history of delinquency on various forms of debt, secured cards can often be less expensive in total cost than unsecured credit cards, including consideration of the security deposit. For those who are serious about rebuilding their credit, or establishing good credit, a secured credit card is a viable avenue to start with.

Poor Credit Credit Cards

Poor Credit credit cards are designed for individuals with an average or a limited credit history who would prefer a traditional credit card over of a secured or prepaid card. While they allow for some discrepancies in one's credit history, being unsecured this type of card is designed primarily for those with, as stated, average or limited credit.

Those with truly bad credit should reconsider and make use of a Secured Credit Card. Each time a credit application is made, and is not approved, it lowers your overall credit score. To apply for a credit card whose approval is questionable could only serve to dig a deeper hole to climb out of.

Credit-Card-Rates.info provides a pre-qualifying questionnaire that does not ask for specific personal information, nor is any information gathered whatsoever. Once submitted the questionnaire returns all of the possible cards you qualify for. Each one links to a non-bias detailed review of both the pros and cons of the card's benefits and rewards. Convenient online application is just one click away from that point.

When using the questionnaire it is in your best interest to answer the questions accurately as it does provide an accurate result to the cards you qualify for. This will help you to keep from getting negative hits on your credit for applying to cards you don't qualify for yet.

Prepaid Credit Cards

Although a prepaid credit card is classified as a credit card, is not really a credit card at all. No credit is offered by the card issuer. The card holder simply deposits money in an account with the issuer and spends the money which has been deposited. In reality, prepaid credit cards are more act more like a debit card. As more consumers require a suitable solution to rebuilding credit, some credit card companies have begun to offer pre-paid credit cards to help rebuild credit.

Reporting to the bureaus is not a standard procedure with most prepaid cards, but some offer the service at a nominal fee. For the purpose of credit building or rebuilding the card is useless if it is not being reported to the three major credit bureaus.

When it comes to prepaid credit cards the author leans to the Eufora(TM) Elite Credit Builder Prepaid MasterCard® and the The Eufora(TM) Preferred Credit Builder Prepaid MasterCard® issued by BANKFIRST. These two prepaid cards are among the highest rated in our research, they will report to the three major credit bureaus for a nominal fee, and offer a considerable rewards package including cash referral fees ranging from $50 to $90 paid each year, for each referral that results in an established account. This alone is reason to purchase the card and could prove to be quite lucrative for those who truly realize the potential. For more information you can visit Rebuild-Credit.us

Student Credit Cards

Student credit cards are just like any regular credit cards except for the fact that there is a little bit more latitude on approvals. This latitude is accompanied with higher interest rates. The author would like to express a word of caution to students seeking a credit card. The lure of "free money" can be very enticing, especially to a young student. But it is important to realize that credit cards are not free money. In fact, if they are abused, you will wind up paying two to three times the initial amount charged.

In today's society, the credit card companies are targeting students at every corner. They are offered pizza, free T-shirts and numerous other gimmicks to get the student to apply for a credit card. If they are approved, often times they are not completely aware of the adverse affect accruing debt is until they find themselves way over their head. The other side of the coin is if they do not get approved they get a hard inquiry hit on their credit and they wide up with a low credit score which hurts them in the future.

It is the opinion of the author that unless the student has a job, and can be responsible to make their payments on time they should avoid student credit cards altogether and perhaps focus on prepaid or secured credit cards. In fact, they should take a serious look at the Eufora(TM) Elite Credit Builder Prepaid MasterCard® and the The Eufora(TM) Preferred Credit Builder Prepaid MasterCard® issued by BANKFIRST which offer considerable annual residual referral bonuses for recommending their prepaid credit cards. The bonuses of between $50 and a $90 are paid when the referral purchases a prepaid card and continue annually as long as the referred card is active. Some of the students use them wisely and build for them an early credit history but others accumulate lots of debts that would have to be paid off once the student life is over. Students that have a credit card should learn how to take charge and manage their own finances as soon as possible, because the time between teen years and adulthood is very short. So, the sooner a student starts managing his own financial matters the sooner he will develop useful financial skills. Student credit cards are no longer a privilege for wealthy students but now are considered a social entitlement.

A student can very easily obtain a student credit card. Offers for student credit cards are everywhere students are: in campuses, at social functions, in their mail boxes, in bookstores, etc. That is because credit companies consider students to be good customers. First of all they are loyal; once a student obtains a credit card, he is likely to keep this particular card for years to come and instead of getting other new cards they upgrade it every time they fill the need to do it. Nowadays, the conditions to obtain a student credit card are very weak, so more and more students have access to them even though they don’t have a steady source of income. And this is a second reason why credit card companies offer more and more credit cards to students: they usually can’t repay their debts in time. And this is what credit cards companies rely on; they make lots of money from late payment penalties, interest fees on unpaid credit card balances, annual fees and more. So, students that don’t repay their credit card balances in full each month are the best customers.

Every college freshman wants to have at least one credit card because it will help him very much during his college years; the student will be able to rent a car, buy books or concert tickets, provide himself help with medical or other emergencies and more. Apart from financial help during college years, student credit cards offer other types of help by building a credit history. Credit history is the record of all that happens in your financial situation throughout the years. Credit scoring is a system based on all that happens to your accounts: late payments, bill paying history, number and type of accounts, outstanding debts and more. If the credit history and scoring are good the student will more easily obtain a house or a car loan, certain types of financial jobs, insurance premiums and more other benefits. So, the student must pay his bills in full or in time, in order to benefit later of their first years of credit history.

The most difficult thing for a student is to choose from the large number of student credit card offers. And the best way for a student to choose a credit card for himself is to talk to other students and get advice from the ones that already have and use a credit card and compare credit card offers online. Before choosing a credit card, the student must be aware of the card’s terms of use. Most student that already have a credit card recommend for the others a card with no annual fee and the option to limit the amount to be spent. And apart from these safety measures, wise students that think of their financial future often take a personal finance course in order to learn all kinds of financial management skills that will help them throughout their entire life.

Students must be very careful when using their student credit cards; they always have to be cautious about the amount charged on the credit card and, at the end of the month, to review the amount of interest they have to pay monthly. It is also recommendable that the credit card balance to be paid as soon as received. If for some reason the balances cannot be paid in full, the student must pay at least the minimum payment required. If problems with paying the credit card balances appear, the student must ask help from a financial counselor that will always have a solution for him as student loan repayments are much more flexible than consumer loan repayments. And another thing students must be careful about is identity theft; the credit card or social security numbers should not be given to anybody over the phone. These are important information that cannot get into the hands of wrong people because will very much damage the credit history. So, we can consider that it is best for students to have a credit card starting with their freshman college years because, if used wisely, the credit card history built in this period will very much help them throughout their entire life.

By: Jeremy Zongker

Credit Cards - Students

Rules and Tips for Students to Protect Their Credit Ratings and Card Privileges.

A student credit card is designed for high school and college students and usually works the same way as any credit card that has been issued by a financial institution. In general a student credit card merely has a few more restrictions relative to non-student cards.

1) Budgeting Beauty

Take time to establish a monthly budget for yourself, one that includes your credit card payments. Watch your bills and compare them with your budget each and every month. To avoid overextending yourself, keep your monthly debt obligation below 10 percent of your monthly net income (after taxes). For example, if your net income is $900 a month, your monthly loan payments should not be more than $90.

That includes your credit card payment because your card is a loan.

2) Adjust Your Spending

Make spending adjustments when necessary. Being prepared for unexpected and planned unexpected expenses is the best way to guarantee that your credit history remains clean and strong.

3) Credit Your Credit

How you handle your bank accounts and other responsibilities may affect your credit so the best way to establish a credit history is to use the credit already given to you. Use your credit responsibly. Be especially sensitive to the payment agreements you made when you established your accounts.

4) Limit Your Limit

The credit limit shown on your statement is the maximum amount that the institution that issued your card is prepared to lend you. Avoid spending to your limit. Set aside a portion of your available credit so you have it for emergencies. Charging over your limit is usually considered a violation of your agreement. You do not want to have to pay additional fees or penalties or force the cancellation or freezing of your account.

5) On Time Every Time

When a card statement arrives at your home, the most important item to notice is the payment due date. Your payment must reach the financial institution by the payment due date whether paying the minimum or paying the total. Otherwise it is considered a late payment and will probably appear on your credit history. Late payments can also be more expensive by incurring penalties, extra fees, or additional finance charges. If the account due date consistently falls at an inconvenient time of the month (a few days before payday, maybe) contact the lender to see if it can change your billing cycle.

6) Minimum Maximum

The minimum payment on your statement is just that: the minimum that the lending institution will accept for that certain month. Always be prepared to make at least the minimum payment. If you wish to reduce your finance charges, or plan to make a number of additional purchases in the coming month, consider paying a larger amount.

7) Stay In Touch

If you change your name or address notify your lender immediately. Send your updated information before the fact, not after. Your payment could turn into a late payment in the time it takes for a statement to be forwarded to your new address. Many creditors are very anxious to have the new college student apply for and get approved for a student credit card, because they realize that if they can strike up a good relationship with this customer at this young age, then it is highly likely that they will be their customer for life. And make no mistake about it, the credit card industry is making money hand over fist these days, especially since very few consumers pay their entire bill in full at the end of the month, so all those interest charges add up.

But the ease of getting a college student credit card is also the bad news because many college students have not yet learned responsible financial management. The temptations when a student is away from home, living in the dorm or an apartment, are tremendous – spending a little here to have a night out at the bar or dance club, spending a little there to chip in for a keg of beer, whipping out the plastic to get airline tickets (even though they are a great deal) for the spring break trip to Florida, and the list goes on.

What happens is that the student is tempted to view this as "free money" since there are not dollars bills floating out of his wallet at the time of the purchase, so it almost seems like they are getting something for "play money". But make no mistake about it, there is nothing fictional about the fact that this student has just racked up some charges on that college student credit card, and it will be a taste of stark reality when he starts to get calls from the credit card issuer asking for payments to be made on time.

Not all possible and available college student credit cards are right for everyone. You should avoid one that charges an excessively high interest rate, unless you know for a fact that you will be paying it off in full at the end of the month. Keep in mind that the credit card issuers are taking a bit of a chance on you, since you probably have little or no credit history established, and therefore the interest rate on virtually ANY credit card you are approved for is going to be higher than "usual", where "usual" would be the rate that perhaps your parents would get approved for, since they already have a credit history established.

Most college students today need a car, and many of them make the mistake of tying up all of their credit cards in paying for a car. This is probably the worst possible option for buying a car, since the interest rates will be astronomical that way. It would be much better to get a separate car loan and keep your credit cards free up for things you really need. You can get more information about getting a superb deal on a car loan, where many of these loans would be tailored for college students, at Car Loan Resources.

You need to be honest with yourself – are you and can you be financially responsible with this college student credit card and you are the only one that can answer that. If you are not sure, then perhaps a secured card would be the best place to start. This is where you make a deposit with the card issuer, say a bank or credit union, and then your credit limit is the amount of your deposit. This is actually a great place to start and to learn fiscal responsibility and to get used to getting into the religious habit of paying your credit card bill on time every month, and to understand how the interest can add up, and unfortunately, how late fees can also add up. But it is a lesson that you will learn quickly, and the good news is that you will remember that for the rest of your life.

For more information about college student credit cards and additional options you should consider and be aware of, I have provided a great deal of information at my web site. Not all credit cards are right for all people, but with the great number of cards readily available, there is almost certainly one that is right for you.

By: Jon Arnold

Is a Student Credit Card Actually a Credit Trap?

Your bright-young-thing goes to college as a student, away from home for the first time, full of the thrill of freedom. And she needs money to spend. While teaching her to manage her money, very often the question is – is it ok to let her have access to huge amounts of credit in the first place? Is it OK to give her a student credit card? Credit card companies are among the first to line up at her door with their attractive offers including freebies, zero interest offers, etc. Before you know it, the student credit card becomes a family liability – a credit trap from which it is difficult to escape. What should one know about credit cards for college students in order to avoid this credit trap?

Pros and Cons of Student Credit Cards

Student credit cards are, in fact, more good than bad. Like anything else, one needs to learn how to choose and handle them correctly, how to position them as an opportunity to build a good credit history, and how to control their usage. A student credit card can be used to teach budgeting and finance as well as to allow flexibility in expenditure while making it safer to use than cash.

Joint Ownership of a Student Credit Card

You need to first see what kind of credit card is best suited for your teen. Some credit cards allow joint ownership between student and parent – that’s the one for you. Lay down a few rules about usage, including deciding on a budget and penalties for misuse. Pick up the credit tab regularly but allow the student to pay back some of the balance with their own earnings. This will encourage them to hold summer jobs and part-time jobs and learn to earn. The advantage of a joint card is that the parent gets a monthly statement which allows them to monitor all expenditures. That’s an opportunity for developing a sense of value in the young college student.

Credit cards for college students can have very low credit limits. This places a restriction on the total spend, forcing the student to think and plan their expenses. Parents can use these cards to show how the money spent needs to be repaid. It can also be an opportunity to teach budgeting to your child and teaching them to choose between what one needs and what one wants.

Student Credit Card Incentives

Companies that issue credit cards for college students also woo clients through attractive cash back or reward points schemes. Once the student sees value in spending intelligently, and pockets rewards for making the right choices, they may look for occasions to use the credit card knowing that there is repayment that is within his control. It allows them the freedom to make the purchases now, knowing that they have the ability to pay it all back in time. Above all, a student credit card becomes invaluable in times of emergency when cash and parents are far away.

So if you want to prevent your family and your teen from falling into the credit card debt trap, you need to first have a sensible and disciplined approach to credit cards yourself. Teens will sub-consciously follow your financial example and behavior patterns when they have access to a student credit card. Therefore, a student credit card can quickly become a ticket to financial freedom or it can deteriorate into a credit trap. The solution lies in giving limited exposure to your child by opting for student credit cards that offer joint ownership. Credit cards for college students are great opportunities for them to begin building a good credit history, which is an important consideration in their first jobs. However, if the teen gets confused signals and is unable to prioritize their budgets, then they will certainly head for trouble. Therefore, the first credit card used by your teen can become a credit trap as easily as it becomes an avenue to financial freedom.

By Kim Stevens

Visa Credit Cards Are Number One

Credit cards offer a high level of security and flexibility to customers, and this is why so many people use their credit cards for day to day purchases as well as for special purchases. The interest may keep on adding up, until you may end up paying only the interest and your credit balance will never be paid off.

If you are interested in obtaining student credit cards, you should examine a few important things. You should find out about the annual fee of the credit card offers. An annual fee is a lump sum that some credit card companies charge to their credit card on a yearly basis.

You should also look at the student credit cards’ interest rate and other fees. In some cases, the interest charges can send a credit card over the limit. When this happens, you will be charged some extra fees, and you can no longer use the credit card. It would be wise to compare the different terms and conditions of various student credit cards, so that you can find the best credit cards. Remember to use them wisely, so that you can get the most benefits from them.

By: Morgan Hamilton

The Nitty-Gritty Of Student Credit Cards

Credit cards can be quite handy, but nowadays they are almost a must to have. This
is true even for high school and college students. Therefore many credit card companies have designed a special student credit card, created specifically for students.

Student credit cards are similar to other credit cards but are more geared toward students and usually come with limitations. Parents are often asked to be co-signers of these cards, since students probably have no credit rating.

Also, the cards' interest rates are usually higher than other cards. And with higher interest rates come higher penalties if the students don't pay their monthly bills on time.

Another restriction is that the spending limit of student credit cards can be quite
low. This is a good protection for the co-signers, so that their students won't go overboard on their spending.

But student credit cards have some advantages too. They can help students establish good credit for one. And they can help teach students about financial responsibility.

Plus it's almost impossible to buy anything over the internet without a credit card. Having a small one makes it more convenient to buy student "necessities" online, such as a new wardrobe or concert tickets.

Considering from all angles, student credit cards can be very practical and helpful for a student's future. They can also be a nightmare for parents, so credit cards of any nature need to be treated with respect.

If student credit cards don't seem like a good idea, then a student can get a debit card. They work just like credit cards, and can have a limit set by the bank account. The only problem is that students aren't gaining any credit rating with them. So I think a better idea is a student credit card with a low (perhaps $250 or $500) credit limit. In that way, a student can gain some responsibility and credit, while not worrying about a large monthly payment.

By: Jim Konerko

The Importance of Using Student Credit Cards Wisely

Are you familiar with student credit cards? These credit cards are meant for college students, and are easier to get than regular credit cards. They can help a student establish credit, but they can also bring credit problems to careless students.

Student credit cards can be a source of temptation for college students. Young adults can be easily tempted to buy unnecessary things with their credit card, even if they do not have the money to pay for it. Eventually the balance they charged for their shopping sprees must be paid back.

If a college student is unable to pay the full amount within a certain period of time, interest will be charged. Credit card companies charge interest at a percentage of the over due balance. For instance, if a student has a $100 balance and the credit card company charges a 15% interest rate, the student now owes $115 to the credit card company.

The interest keeps adding up and eventually the student may end up paying only the interest, and their credit card balance is never going to be paid off. That is why the parents of college students should first explain the proper use of student credit cards to their children, before they allow them to get credit cards.

There are also a few things that should be examined before students choose a particular credit card. It is important to check the annual fee of student credit cards. An annual fee is a lump sum that some credit card companies charge to their credit card every year.

It would also be wise to look at the interest rate and other fees of student credit cards. There are cases where the interest charges can send a credit card over the limit. This will cause extra fees, and the student will be unable to use the credit card. Students should pay attention to the different terms and conditions of student credit cards, so that they can determine the particular credit card that is best for them.

By; Morgan Hamilton

That Student Needs A Student Credit Card, Today

Student credit cards allow their users to understand the benefits of "real world" credit card usage prior to graduating college and taking on a full time occupation. Typically, for most college students, their student credit card is their first credit card and the door-opener to the world of credit card usage. Some students may have previously used supplementary credit cards, but those credit cards are linked to their father’s or mother’s credit card account. However, it is true for those college students too, that their student credit card is the first credit card they can truly call their own.

Student credit cards are essentially the same as other credit cards. They are used in the same way as other credit cards are. Some differences come into play for student credit card users, primarily because they have no prior experience using credit cards and more than likely don’t understand credit cards, conceptually and completely. Therefore, credit card issuers are at risk when approving student credit cards for young individuals who have little or no credit or credit card usage history. The inexperience of the student credit card user, in managing their finances competently, puts the student credit card issuer at risk of receiving the monthly credit card bill payments on time and/or receiving the payments at all. To insure themselves from student credit card issuance risks, the issuer of student credit cards usually requires a parent of the student to co-sign the student credit card application form. Also, the credit limit assigned to student credit cards is lower than it is for credit cards issued to working adults. Still, the assigned credit limit is, most often, large enough to fulfill the college student’s needs. Another method credit card issuers use to dissuade college students from overspending is to assign a higher interest rate to the student credit card.

If we are to look at those seeming, previously mentioned, impositions in a positive manner, we would find that the same impositions are actually advantageous to the student, who is still training to manage real world credit card usage. Most often those impositions will assist the student credit card user in establishing good credit history. Good credit history will be important to the student at a later date in his or her life, when they want to procure more credit cards or loans.
Student credit cards are a very significant way to establish good credit. They are financial tools which most college student should consider acquiring.

By: Art Taylor

Avoid Best Student Credit Card

Students are prone to acquiring credit card. Why? Because most young people do not know or are not paying attention on how to handle their credit cards correctly. Here are some practical advice on the suitable use of student credit card and how to avoid credit card.

It’s Just a Marketing Strategy

Be aware that credit card companies are experts when it comes to marketing their business. They spend millions of dollars in using different marketing strategies to get your attention, to grab your interest and move you to sign up with their company. Credit card companies may give away freebies, offer instant approval, and other promotional tactics which can be very hard to resist. Don’t be too immature in applying for a credit card especially student credit card.. Remember, there’s more to it than just the freebie.

Don’t Settle for High Rates

There are so many different credit card companies that are rival in the market today that students don’t have to settle for a credit card with substandard features. Some credit card companies charge high rates for students because they haven’t yet established their own credit. However, there are still other student credit card issuers who offer reasonable rates even for students like you. Don’t rush in signing up that application as if there’s no tomorrow. Take your time in choosing the right student credit card with the most reasonable rates. Compare the rates and features that each credit card provides. Only then can you be sure that you’ve chosen the right one.

Control the Use of Your Student Credit Card

Don’t use your student credit card on all your spending needs. For instance, if you’re going to eat in a restaurant or watch a movie be sure you have the budget to spend on it. Don’t use your student credit card on such expenses. If you’ll get into the habit of charging all your expenses on your student credit card, it is not unlikely that you will soon be facing credit card debt. Because credit cards are so convenient to use, you won’t immediately realize that you’re already spending way out of your means.
Educate Yourself

You can find valuable articles on the internet that are related to credit cards and student credit card management. Learn about the features of a student credit card, know your rights and your responsibilities as a credit card holder, know what a credit report is, how your credit report can affect you and read advises on how you can manage your finances correctly.

Pay Your Dues

Using your student credit card in purchasing doesn’t grant you the freedom from paying it back. So pay your credit card balances on time and never ever try to skip on a payment. Be aware about the scheduled deadline on your payments. Check your monthly statement of account and see to it that you’re keeping up with your credit card payments.

In College? Student credit card does not require a co-signer, since the credit limit is low and if the limit is breached you must have a co-signer. This co-signer will be responsible for the payment. Student credit cards are available online, and one can choose according to the needs of the credit card.

Leading student credit cards offer 0% APR up to six months on balance transfers, cash advances and purchases, enabling you not to default on your credit card payments. But before using a card one must be sure of the terms and conditions. The APRs for student credit card are above normal rates but if one chooses to pay the balance before the grace period, then that is sufficient. Some credit cards have no annual fees and allow you to manage the account online.

Choosing The Right Card

You may come across student credit cards while searching online. Once you get the list, compare them against each other and look for a card with low interest rates and no annual fees. It is always better to have a regular student credit card. Once you get hold of a credit card at least once.

How To Use

Different student credit cards offer many multiple offers and students should select a credit card with no annual fee and low interest rates. The credit limit should not be exceeded. The payment should be done in the same month. Once you manage to have a regular student credit card, you can apply for other credit cards. The proper usage of credit card can keep under good rating; else you will be bankrupt in the young age and will be ruined.

By: Zack Nelson

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://beststudentcreditcard.blogspot.com/2008/06/in-college-find-best-student-credit.html' title='In College?
